Robert L.Y. Long was born in Marshall's Ferry Tennessee the son of John and Charity Taylor May Long. At the age of fourteen his father moved to Carrollton, Carroll county, Georgia. His father was the second Clerk of Carroll county, and served thirty-two years. After that he became a judge.
Robert's mother died when he was 6 months old and 10 years later his father married Nancy Young Long.
On June 1, 1836, Robert enlisted in Captain W.S. Parr's Company in the Creek Indian War, and on November 2, 1837, he was in the Seminole War in Florida, as Captain of the Carroll Rangers Cavalry and with one exception was the youngest of the company, and was mustered out May 13, 1838.
On June 13, 1839, Robert began to read medicine with Dr. A.B. Calhoun for one year. He attended medical college at Charleston, S.C., Tulane University in Louisiana, and graduated from Transylvania College, Lexington, KY., March 13, 1841. He located the same year at Greenville, GA., where he remained one year. He came to Newnan where he remained until 1844. He practiced in the country three years with Dr. Ira E. Smith. He went to Louisiana and practiced until 1848 and then returned to Newnan.
June 11, 1861, he enlisted at Camp Mcdonald, near Big Shanty, in Co. C, Phillips Legion Cavalry, as first lieutenant. In short time he was elected captain. He was in many hard fought conflicts: Spottsylvania Court House, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Williamsburg and many others.
At Williamsburg, he with 250 men, captured 1,100 men under Col. Campbell, the captian riding the same horse 125 miles in 25 hours.
Robert was married in Newnan to Martha Ann Powell, October 23, 1849. There were eight children to bless this union. Edgar H., John D., James J., Eugene, Charles D., Helen May, R.L.Y.,Jr., Mary Ida Hill.
