Paul Windisch

WRITTEN BY SENTINEL-TRIBUNE STAFF
WEDNESDAY, 03 FEBRUARY 2010 12:50
Bowling Green banker and community leader Paul N. Windisch passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at home.
He was born September 29, 1941, in Sandusky, Ohio, to Ralph and Virginia (Cebull) Windisch.
A graduate of Sandusky St. Mary's High School, Paul arrived in Bowling Green as a college freshman in the fall of 1959 and never left. After receiving his bachelor's and master's degrees from Bowling Green State University, he was employed there in various administrative capacities for ten years.
He married his best friend, Cheryl Cunningham, on August 22, 1970.
Paul left BGSU in 1975 to begin a career in banking that would span 34 years, initially at Huntington, then briefly at Sky, and since 2000 at the Bowling Green office of First Federal Bank of the Midwest. He relished his years at First Federal because of its community focus, his daily contact with customers, and the challenges of business development.

Loyal to BGSU, he was a member of the Falcon Club, President's Club, Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and Omicron Delta Kappa. He was always willing to speak to a class, do mock interviews, mentor students, or serve on committees.
BGSU's Athletic Department recently recognized him for serving 42 years as the timer for Falcon men's basketball games.
Paul loved the city of Bowling Green and shared his leadership skills for decades with many organizations. He was a longtime member and past-president of Noon Kiwanis, Wood County Economic Development Commission, Wood County Hospital Board of Trustees, the Bowling Green Area Schools' Board of Education and Junto.
He volunteered for many years with United Way and chaired the Wood County campaign. The BG Chamber of Commerce named him Citizen of the Year in 2003; he was humbled by the honor.
He was known as a positive and upbeat role model, a person who knew many people and always remembered their names, and as a man of strong faith.
Paul grew up caddying and golfing; his golf team was recently inducted into the St. Mary's Hall of Fame. Paul enjoyed playing golf at Stone Ridge Golf Club, where he was a charter member, and spending time with family and friends at the family's vacation home in Sunset Beach, N.C.
Above all else, Paul was devoted to and proud of his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl; daughter Karen (Tom) McDonnell, Powell, Ohio; son Michael (Amberly) Windisch, Lexington, Kentucky; and the joy of his last decade, his six grandchildren: Jack, Katelyn and Patrick McDonnell; and Zachary, Anna Leah and Trevor Windisch, all of whom adored their "Papa Paul." He is also survived by his sister Barbara (John) Krause, Sandusky; sister-in-law Linda Cunningham, Wilmington, N.C.; and brother-in-law Scott (Gay) Cunningham, Cleveland.
Friends will be received on Thursday, Feb. 4, at Dunn Funeral Home , 408 W. Wooster St., Bowling Green , from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m., with vigil services at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, February 5, 2010, at Blessed John XXIII Catholic Community, 24250 Dixie Highway, Perrysburg, Ohio, with Father Herb Weber officiating and where the family will receive friends after 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests tributes to the Bowling Green Area Schools Foundation (Windisch Family Scholarship) or to any other charities and causes that would continue to make Bowling Green a wonderful community.
