Mary Biasotti Resident of Lafayette Mary Biasotti, a loving wife, mother and grandmother to her own family and a virtual sister, mother or grandmother to anyone who knew her well, died peacefully in the early morning hours of July 26. She was 100.
Born Josephine Mary Vespa in Piedmont, Calif., she was the only child of two Italian immigrants, Francesco and Elizabeth Vespa. Mary grew up in Oakland, where she attended McClymonds High School and Heald Business College. In 1931, she married Joe Biasotti, another child of Italian immigrants. They would stay married for more than 70 years, until Joe died in 2002.
Mary and Joe moved to Lafayette in 1949 and became active members of the community and of St. Perpetua Catholic Church. They raised two sons, Raymond and Robert. It was a small immediate family, but their extended family was limitless. Mary's generosity and hospitality meant that from the 1940s to the 1990s, she was constantly welcoming - and feeding - a house full of cousins, friends, grandchildren or neighborhood kids. Mary enjoyed sewing, reading, cooking and talking to her friends and family. She was an attentive and quiet listener, until the time came to give a piece of advice, which was always simple and wise. She was an exceptional Italian cook. She shared her recipes freely, and her friends and family who have them today treasure them, yet some suspect she held back a secret ingredient or two. When someone else makes one of her dishes, it always tastes like there's a little something missing. For the last eight years, Mary lived at Carlton Plaza Assisted Care in San Leandro, where she was well taken care of and made friends of both the residents and the staff. She was blessed with longevity and with the capacity to appreciate it. At her 100th birthday party, held earlier this year, Mary told stories spanning the entire century of her life, each one clear, funny, touching and to the point. The love of her friends and family and the photos and cards from that day gave her great joy in her remaining months.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Joe.
She is survived by her two sons: Raymond Biasotti (wife Terry) and Robert Biasotti (wife Nanci); three grandchildren: Tony Biasotti (wife Gretchen), David Biasotti and Natalie Sucharski (husband Jeremy); and two great-grandchildren: Rosemary Biasotti and Gianna Sucharski.
Visitation will be held at Hull's Walnut Creek Chapel, 1139 Saranap Ave., on Thursday, Aug. 2, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Aug. 3, at St. Perpetua Church, 3454 Hamlin Road, Lafayette, starting at 11 a.m. Entombment to follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in San Pablo. The family requests donations be directed to either Children's Home Society of California-Oakland, or VITAS Innovative Hospice Care.
