George W. Leger, born in Germany but claiming French descent, came to Mokelumne Hill in 1851. George married Louisa Wilkens, also from Germany, May 26, 1858 in Calaveras County. (according to county records)
Proprietor of The Hotel Leger, which he purchased soon after his arrival in Mokelumne Hill, he lived there until his death. Legend has it his spirit can still be felt there, in and about Room 7, and the hallway puffing on his cigar.
