Mr. Gleiter was a 1942 graduate of the University of Wisconsin in River Falls. He received a certificate in meteorology from the University of Chicago, and a certificate in tropical meteorology from the University of Puerto Rico, both in 1944.
He served in the U.S. Navy in North Africa during World War II and received a master's degree in public administration from American University in Washington in 1952.
He retired in 1979 from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, where he had been an administrator, and also spent 13 years as an employee benefits supervisor for the Fairfax County Department of Personnel.
He was preceded in death by both of his wives, Marcia Healy Gleiter in 1971, and Caroline Davis Gleiter in 2004, and a son from his first marriage, Thomas "Tom" Gleiter in 2004.
He is survived by three daughters from his first marriage, Karin Gleiter of North Carolina, Jan Gleiter of Illinois, & Martha Galep of Wisconsin; two sons-in-law, Paul Thompson & John Galep; daughter-in-law, Sue Gleiter; eight grandchildren.
Memorial services were conducted at the First Trinity Lutheran Church in Washington on Saturday, June 6i, 2009. No burial information provided.
