Hurley was the son of James "Jim" H. Spray and Elnora "Ella" N. Fanning and a resident of Frogville.

He married Exie Verline "Linnie" McAlister, daughter of John Roy McAlister and Louisa Caldonia "Donie" Monks, on 3 October 1925 in Lincoln Co., TN.

One of the victims of the notorious 1930 Flying Circus crash near the Fayetteville Fairgrounds, Hurley passed away at the scene. He was survived by Linnie, his wife of less than five years, and one child.

Incidentally, the death year on his tombstone is in fact incorrect by one year.

On 8 January 1933 in Lincoln Co., TN Linnie remarried to Otis Nichols McCown, Sr. They had several kids.
