Death: Oct. 30, 1925

He was the son of Theophilus Gaines 'Op' (1842-1935) and Mary Margaret White (1850-1926) Hammond.

His siblings (10): Bessie Belle Hammond Day (1866-1909); Minnie May Hammond (1867-1884); Thomas Clarence Hammond (1869-1958); James Alfred Wedan Hammond (1875-1896); George Kennedy Hammond (1877-1959); Carrie 'Grace' Hammond Ross (1881-1952); Alice Hazel Hammond Wright (1883-1964); Clint Harry Hammond (1885-1969); Mark Evert Hammond (1888-1968); and Jessie Margaret Hammond Nagel Gaither (1890-1967).

Charles first married Alice M Woodson (1876-1906) on March 8, 1896 in Jennings Co,Indiana. They had three children: Laura Elizabeth Hammond King (1899-1987); Velma Lottie Hammond Harmon (1902-1962) and an infant son (1906-1906).

Charles second married Josephine Herron (1876-1923) on March 11, 1907 in Columbus, Bartholomew Co, Indiana. They had one child: Charles Davidson Hammond (1910-1994).

Soon after his second marriage he, his wife and two daughters moved to Sikeston, Missouri. There was a horse track in Sikeston - town well known for horse racing. (In 1910 his son, Charles D, was born there.) Charles A had a horse farm at the edge of Sikeston.

By about January of 1917 they were back in North Vernon, Jennings Co, Indiana. He had a horse farm there. North Vernon was also well known for horse racing.

About January of 1918 Charles and Josephine separated. Josephine, Charles D and Velma went to Greenwood, Johnson Co, Indiana. Charles stayed in North Vernon. He continued to raise horses and travel the horse circuit. Charles had horses (Lula Belle, a pacer, andJo Jo, a trotter) that held records (sulky).

Over the years he lost all his wealth and his stable of horses dwindled. He died at his parents' home due to a complication of diseases - a destitute man. The last horse he had was named Flair.

He died at age 53 years 0 months 22 days.

Above pictures taken about 1900 and July 1915.
