John Henry Erwin died on Sunday March 31, 1996. Funeral Services will be held at Wilkerson-Hatch on Wednesday April 3, 1996. Bert Mercer will officiate the services, and burial will follow at Gerald Cemetery.
John was born to Walter Henry and Willie Lee Erwin on September 20, 1912. He was born and went to school in Ross Texas. On February 19, 1944 Johnny married Oden Martha "Deannie" Janke in Waco. They met on a blind date and briefly dated before getting married. They shared 52 years of marriage and were active members of Crestview Church of Christ.
John Henry worked for the United States Corps of Engineers in Cristabol, Panama Canal Zone. In 1944 Mr. Erwin was inducted into the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor where he was involved with salvage operations. Upon discharge he returned to Waco where he began a construction business which he operated for 30 years. John was very active in various clubs, and organizations including Farm and Ranch Club, Elm Mott Riding Club, West Longhorn Club, American Association of Retired People and served as president of each of these clubs. He was a member of VFW Post 4819 and worked with the Boy Scouts of America. Mr Erwin owned and worked a farm and had a strong interest in agriculture and farming.
Some of the construction projects he was most proud of were the aerial cross walk over South Valley Mills Drive, 100 residences built in Abilene (1959) in 9 months, major water line extension with three river crossings for the City of Waco, 69 concrete bridges for McLennan County, and Baylor University utility tunnel.
Survivors include: his wife Oden Martha (Janke) Erwin. daughter Sharon Joyce McNary, son and daughter-in-law John Wayne and Margaret Erwin, five grandchildren Shellie Joyce, Shelia Kay and Sherry Ann McNary, Emily Margaret and John Walter Erwin. two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Belle Crabb, Mrs. Clara Grier, brother James Erwin, numerous nieces and nephew.
Pallbearers: M. Frank Beard, Carter H. Compton, David Hennig, Homer Jones, Clyde D. Martin, Ronnie Thorne, Ercel Wagner, and Robert (Chiggar) Webb.
Honorary Pallbearers: Emmitt Wilshire, Albert Crabb, Yandell Sparks, Ken Gooch, Paul Thompson, Angel Benkendorfer, Joe Lechler, John Thomas, Wes Murphy, Pat Beard, Johnny Sauls, George Logan, Royce Reagan, Dr. John Speckmiear, and Ray Geldmeier.
Memorial may be made to Hospitality House in Houston, TX, or your favorite charity.
