Douville, Donald Ralph

Donald Ralph Douville October 31, 1929 - January 12, 2008 Mass of the Christian Burial for Donald Ralph Douville will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help on Thursday morning, January 17, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. officiated by Monsignor Michael Braun. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Donald passed away quietly at home on January 12, 2008 with his family gathered around him. He was born in 1929, on a rainy Halloween night in Hartford, Connecticut. He grew up in Lowell, Massachusetts. He served four years in the U.S. Navy in Panama and points beyond, he then went on to Saint Anselm College and continued his education at UC Berkeley. Don married his childhood sweetheart Ann Deeney of Lowell, Massachusetts, and together they raised four children, Debbie, Dennis, Dee Dee and David, affectionately known as the 4 D's. After earning his Bachelors degree in Criminology from UC Berkeley, Don started his lifelong career in Law Enforcement as a Riverside County Deputy Sheriff. He continued his career with the U.S. Navy as a Special Agent for the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI). He subsequently worked for the Kern County Welfare Department, and finally found his passion being a Professor in the Administration of Justice Department at Bakersfield College. He also taught classes at University of California Santa Barbara Extension in Bakersfield and the Kern County Peace Officers Training Academy. Throughout his career in Law Enforcement, Don or "Buddy" as his close friends called him, continued his education earning a Masters degree at Fresno State and a PhD in Education from Nova University; all while starting his teaching career at Bakersfield College in Administration of Justice Department. Don loved to teach and he found great reward in the classroom. He taught at Bakersfield College for 30 years; his great legacy is in both guiding the budding careers and continuing education needs of many local law enforcement personnel in his classroom at Bakersfield College. For a time Don served as a college administrator for the Kern County Community College District, but his real love was the student's career goals and the classroom. After a brief stint as an administrator, Don returned to his true love: the classroom. He taught until he retired in May 2001. While at BC, he also helped manage the Bakersfield College Pistol Club. Many of his former students at Bakersfield College would fondly tell our family stories about their classroom experiences, and reminisce about him as a great teacher with a unique sense of humor. Many of his students have gone on to serve their local communities in the law enforcement field. He will be greatly missed by all those lives he touched, especially his grandchildren whom he loved to take to the beach in his fifth wheel trailer for weeks at a time in the summer months. Don also loved and remembered the many day trips with Jerry Gutierrez to all points beyond in Kern County. Don is survived by his wife Ann of 57 years; his children, Debbie Kirschenmann and Jerry Gutierrez, Dennis and Margaret Douville, Dee Dee and Jerry Crisman (recently passed away from cancer) and David Douville, along with his grandchildren, Cristin, Jacob, Andrew, Alexys, Roseann and little Lacie. Our family would like to thank all the wonderful nurses and staff at Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit, the Silvercrest Home, and Odyssey Hospice. We very much appreciate all the love, care, and encouragement given to our dad. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Alzheimer's Association or Odyssey Hospice.
