Ralph was a Famous Jockey, he began riding at age 13 ,he rode for 30 years and had 3,772 victories. In 1960, he was inducted into the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame.

He was nicknamed "the Portuguese Pepperpot" due to his temper and daredevil riding style which earned him a part in the film Broadway Bill as a stunt double for actor Frankie Darro.

He made News headlines when he was just 19 years old such as "Dead Jockey Rides to Victory" published on (May 8, 1936). The article told of his near Death track accident and how he unexpectedly returned after he had been toe-tagged and sent to the morgue.

The story goes on to explain how he caught a cab back to the racetrack half-dressed and wearing a toe tag, back to Bay Meadows Racecourse near San Francisco, California.(The Racetrack known for being home of the famous Race Horse "Seabiscuit" ) The article goes on to tell how Mr Neves as said "I think everyone on the track was chasing me." As he fought his way through the crowd into the jockeys' room, where the other jockey's were taking up a collection for his widow, who fainted when she saw him.

After proclaiming he wasn't dead and demanding to be allowed to ride, Track officials made the decision not to allow him to return to riding until the following day when he had five wins won the meet's top prize — (A $500 watch donated by Bing Crosby).

An announcement of his death was made on July 7, 1995, more than 59 years after that premature announcement at Bay Meadows Race track. He died in his sleep in a nursing home.
