Elisabeth was born in Gelsenkirchen-Horst, Germany. She was the daughter of Johanna (Kukwa) Krause. I do not know her fathers name. He was killed in a mining accident in either 1906 or 1907, leaving behind seven children. Elisabeth, Marichen, Gella (Gella had a twin sister who died at birth), Thomas, Franz, Johann and Anna. Being the oldest, Elisabeth took care of her siblings while her mother went to work. Elisabeth went to school to become a dressmaker.
In 1922 she married Oscar Kulessa in Horst-Emscher, Germany. The following year, the newly weds with their first child on the way sailed for the United States. Upon arrival they proceeded to Dowell, Illinois, where their first child, Paul, was born March 13, 1924.
After the mines Dowell where Oscar worked closed, they moved to St. Louis, Missouri. Here, Elisabeth continued to do dressmaking and fancy smocking for wealthy families. Elisabeth gave birth to their second child, Jeanne, on December 1, 1930.
Elisabeth got her United States citizenship papers on November 9, 1944. Both she and Oscar belonged to the German Singing Societies and enjoyed the German Community, meeting at the German House at Jefferson and Lafayette Streets. After the second World War, the German House was renamed the St. Louis House.
Elisabeth remained in St. Louis until her death in 1991 at the age of 94.
