Enlisted 2 Sept 1861 in Company B, Pennsylvania 76th Infantry Regiment. Mustered out on 21 Jul 1864.He was wounded 11 Jul 1863 at the First Battle of Fort Wagner, Morris Island, Charleston, South Carolina. He lost the lower part of his left leg. Then was taken prisioner by the Confederate Army. Before his discharge he was decorated by Gen. J.J. Gillmore for brave and meritorious conduct. In 1933 he received two more decorations: the "Gold Heart" for veterans with a hospital record and another given to both Northern and Southern veterans. He was one of a comparatively few to be awarded a Congressional Medal.
