Samantha Plummer entered the service as a nurse Sept 23, 1861, and served until the end of the Civil War. She was on the bloody fields of Shiloh and Vicksburg. She personally knew General Grant. She served at hospitals in Corinth, MS; Columbus, KY; Nashville, TN; and established a soldier's home in St Louis, MO, where she served as matron. She was also named Chaplain of the Association of Army Nurses of the Civil War.

She applied for a Invalid pension Jan 6, 1891 and it was approved Feb 14, 1891. Several of those she cared for during the Civil War attended her funeral.
