Second Lieutenant Arnold was a co-pilot aboard B-17F Flying Fortress #42-6042, serving with the 600th Bomb Squadron, 398th Bomb Group from Rapid City Army Air Base.


One of eight airmen killed when his aircraft struck Stormy Peaks, west of Fort Collins, Colorado, during a nighttime navigational training flight.
