The eldest son of Rufus and Nancy Edwards. Jim attended Arkansas Cumberland College in Clarksville, Arkansas where he pitched for the baseball team. He farmed and taught school before leaving for British Columbia, Canada to seek his fortune. While there he found employment with the Northern Pacific
Logging Company as a lumberman on the Island of Queen Charlotte. He continued work in the timber industry and as a gold prospector until his death in 1938.
