Art Frantz was a Minor League Baseball player and umpire and a Major League Baseball umpire. Frantz began his baseball career as a pitcher in the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1940. From 1940 to 1942 and 1944 to 1946, he had a 30-37 win-loss record. Begining in 1942, Frantz would occasionally play third base, shortstop, or the outfield. He would later switch to a full time position player. He umpired in the New York-Penn League from 1958 to 1962 and the Pacific Coast League from 1963 to 1968. In 1969, Frantz began umpiring in the American League in 1969, where he umpired until 1977. In his 9 year Major League umpiring career, he umpired 1,386 games. His other accomplishments include umpiring the 1974 All-Star Game, the 1972 and 1976 American League Championship series, and umpirng the 1975 World Series. He was in the U.S. Army Air Corp. from October 1942 to October 1943, and he married Josephine Condello in 1945.
