A company director's daughter fell to her death after he lifted her into a beach cave while on an 'Enid Blyton' style adventure.
Harry Clarke was rock pooling with daughter Eleanor, 11, during a holiday in Cornwall when he lifted her onto a ledge to explore a cave. She walked 15ft into the cavern before suddenly screaming as she plunged 20ft into the darkness.
Enid's a father who read Enid Blyton books to his children said, "It never occurred to me that this could take my child from me in a matter of seconds. My family and I are now deeply concerned that unassuming people must be kept away from reasonable danger."
Tragedy struck at around 1.15pm at Perranporth Beach on August 11, 2011 as Eleanor, of Andover, Hants., enjoyed a family holiday in Cornwall. Reading from a statement, a tearful Mr Clarke said: "At lunchtime my son Sam and Eleanor and I went to explore some rocks we had noticed on the beach the previous day. I bunked Eleanor up a ledge and she walked into the cave about 15ft in and then I heard a scream. I got Sam to bunk me up and went in. It was pitch black and I couldn't see anything. A few moments later someone else arrived and that was when I was lowered into the shaft. I felt her body and she felt lifeless."
Special Constable Shaun Mallet, from Nottinghamshire Police, was on holiday at the time and heard her screams at Droskyn Point. In a statement read out to the inquest in Truro, he said: "The tide was out and it was a sunny day. I heard a cry that sounded like 'help'. I looked up and then heard a more distinct second shout. All of a sudden a man looked out from the entrance of a cave. He said 'My daughter has fallen down a hole. I need help now."
With the help of a lifeguard who had arrived on scene, they lifted Eleanor out onto the beach and gave her chest compressions and an oxygen mask.
The pretty schoolgirl, who has two brothers, was airlifted to Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro in a critical condition but died hours later.
Perranzabuloe parish council sealed off the cave.
