Capt. A.J. Cates, who suffered a paralytic stroke on Friday last, died at midnight (Oct 3, 1904) at St Paul's Hospital, Vancouver, B.C. The deceased gentleman was in the 75th year of his age. From the time that he was stricken, till the hour of his death, deceased never recovered consciousness. The late Capt. Cates, who was very well known in Vancouver, came here in 1888. He was born in Machias, Washington, Maine on Dec 9, 1831 and he followed the sea till 1862, when he left his ship in the Bay of Fundy, N.s. and settled in that province with his family. In Nova Scotia the deceased followed the lumber business. In 1888 he came west and became a resident of Vancouver. Those left to mourn the loss of the late Capt. Cates are 2 brothers, William, master of a ship now at Machias, and Warren, master of a vessel running out of New York. A third brother was lost at sea 23 years ago. Here in Vancouver the relatives of the deceased are his widow Mrs. Catherine Cates, Capt. C.H. Cates, G.E. Cates ship builder, Capt. J.A. Cates, Capt. James Cates master of the tug "Lorne", Will Cates engineer of the steamer "Britannia" and Miss Lillie Cates. Another son of the deceased, Frank Cates, is a merchant at Amherst, N.S. The funeral is on Thurs at 9 a.m. from the Church of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary to the Mountain View Cemetery.
