Tractor Upset Kills Farmer
Harry E. Long, 73, Pioneer Countian

A 73-year-old pioneer Sedgwick County farmer was killed late Friday afternoon when he was pinned beneath a tractor he was driving as it overturned in a roadside ditch at 63rd South and Maize Bd.
Victim of the freak accident was identified as Harry Emmanuel Long, Clearwater, a resident of this area since 1904.
Sgt. Jim Maloney, sheriff's laboratory investigator, said Long drove into the 24-inch-deep ditch on the west side of Maize , Rd. after apparently unhooking a plow from the tractor. Long had been working on his 80-acre farm.

Pinned Underneath

Maloney said the tractor overturned, pinning Long beneath the tractor seat and steering wheel. He said the seat and steering wheel landed on the farmer's chest and abdomen, apparently causing internal injuries. He said there was a possibility that Long suffered a heart attack-before the tractor tipped over.
Other workers in the field saw the accident and rushed to aid the farmer. They pulled the tractor off his body with a truck and then called for a County Fire Department rescue squad. When the rescue squad arrived, Long was dead.
Mr. Long and his wife, Margretta, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Feb. 16. They were married near Oatville Feb 16, 1910, six years after Mr. Long came to Kansas.

Native of Iowa

He was born July 31, 1886, in Ottumwa, Iowa, and came to Kansas, settling near Oatville southwest of Wichita, when he was 17.
He was a member of Clearwater Masonic Lodge, Wichita Consistory, Bayneville Grange and Sedgwick County Farm Bureau. His mother, Mrs. Emma Long, of Clearwater, died Feb. 1.
Besides his wife, Mr. Long is survived by a son, Howard, Clearwater; two daughters, Mrs. Charles Mullendore, Clearwater, and Mrs. Lloyd Maechtlen, Rt. 8, Wichita; two sisters, Mrs. Neal Hormel and Mrs. Floyd Woods, both of Clearwater; and two brothers, E. A. Long, Clearwater, and B. R. Long, 2337 Jardine Dr.
