Sophia was born to William McKnight and Esther Fuller Packard, 4th of 9 children, at the old Abisha Packard farm. The homestead was built by Sophia's maternal great grandfather when the area of St. Lawrence County was still wilderness.

She was the first of her parents' children to marry. Her first spouse was John Lawrence Stark, son of Russell and Eveline (Wood) Stark.

Her first child was William Russell Stark, who was also first grandchild on both his paternal and maternal sides. Sophia named him after his grandfathers.

Between 1885 and 1897 Sophia left her husband, he a resident of Canton, New York. She and the children went first to Burlington, Vermont and then moved on to Brattleboro within a couple of years. Husband John suffered for years with a chronic illness then called "Bright's Disease" but the reason she left him has been lost with time.

She and her children moved from Brattleboro to New London, Connecticut in late June 1900, just before the birth of her first grandchild. She spent the remainder of her life at various addresses in Groton and New London. There was an additional short-lived marriage to Herbert C. Daniels.

Her grandchildren and great grandchildren fondly called her "big grandma" to distinguish her from her daughter Lillian. They also recalled her fondness for a good cup of tea.

She died at her granddaughter's and was laid out in the parlor for viewing prior to burial.

Children: William R.; Wallace P.; Heber N.; Lillian V.; Leo P..
