Charles Lemuel Eakin was born August 2, 1865 in Indianola, Vermillion County, Illinois to Ellen Marie Fairbanks and Edmund Williams Eakin. He attended the high school in Danville.

In 1883 he came to the territory of Dakota. His biography in "History of South Dakota" by Doane Robinson states "He has achieved prosperity and independence and gained prestige as one of the able business men and influential citizens of his home county, where he is held in high esteem by all who know him. In politics Mr. Eakin is a stalwart adherent of the Republican party, and in a social way, he is affiliated with the Masonic fraternity, the Ancient Order of United Workmen and the Knights of the Maccabees."

Charles married Etta J. Sheldon in Harrold, South Dakota on November 11, 1891.

On August 9, 1892 a daughter, Etta S.Eakin, was born in Harrold, South Dakota. Charles's wife Etta died on August 17, 1892 from complications from an infection. Baby Etta spent the first 4 months of her life with her Grandparents Sheldon. The Eakin Grandparents wanted the baby so she was brought to their home in Pierre, South Dakota where she lived til she left home for nurses training.

Charles married Lelia Bailey(1870-1953) on July 8, 1895. Children born to this union were Russell Lowell Eakin (1896-1967) & Muriel Virginia Eakin Strickland(1897-1992).

Charles's daughter Etta said her Dad "raised cattle and he had a ranch out at Midland, South Dakota...that's where he lived a lot, but then he lived at Blunt, South Dakota." She recalled he made trips to Chicago to sell his cattle. He rode in the caboose of the train.

In his biography he is described as "the owner of a finely improved ranch of sixteen hundred acres, near Blunt, Hughes county."
