The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, October 17, 1963

Martin Hamel, son of Martin and Barbara (Weber) Hamel, was born October 1, 1884, at Ipava, Illinois, and departed this life on September 29, 1863, at the age of 78 years, 11 months, and 29 days.

At the age of nine years, he moved with his family to Alvo, Nebraska, where they resided for twelve years, then moving to Nora, NE in 1906.

On January 12, 1910, he was united in marriage to Oral Edith Coles at Nelson, Nebraska. To this union were born five children: three sons and two daughters. Two sons, Verle Leroy, and Morris Owen and his wife preceded him in death.

He moved with his wife and family to a farm northeast of Holbrook, NE, in 1922 which was their home until January of 1950 when, due to failing health, he and Mrs. Hamel retired to make their home in Holbrook.

He united with the Church of the Brethren as a young man and after moving to Holbrook was a faithful attendant of the Baptist Church as long as his health permitted him to go.

After the death of his wife on September 28, 1957, he lived in Holbrook for some time, later going to make his home with his children until becoming a resident of the Mues Rest Home at Arapahoe, NE, in April, 1962. On September 12, 1963, he suffered a severe stroke from which he never recovered.

He is survived by his three children, Hollis Hamel of Cambridge, NE, Lois Duensing of Holbrook, NE, and Eunice Missing of Arapahoe, NE; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; his daughter-in-law, Darlene Hamel; sons-in-law, Art Duensing and Paul Missing; one sister, Mrs. Ed Lanham of Nora, NE; four brothers, Charles of Superior, NE, Cyrus of McCook, NE, Herman of Torrington, WY, and Jesse of Nora, NE; and a host of other relatives and friends.
