Mr. A.J. Jewell Cochran, 81, of Coogler Road, Dalton, died Monday, April 17, 1995, at the Wooddale Nursing Home, the day before his 82nd birthday.
Jewell, or later known as "JJ", was one of the original singers of the "Dalton 4 Quartet" gospel singers. He was a DJ for Dalton's WBLJ Radio Station Gospel Hour. Jewell was also a songwriter for Showalter, writing the music portion, and published two pieces, one being, "Beautiful Peace". The words were written by Rev. Dr. Alfred Barratt. During the depression, Jewell also taught harmony classes to people through the local churches. During the 60's he was one of the top salesmen for the Burnette Ford dealership in Dalton. In the 70's, Jewell also sold industrial supplies from Echota Commercial supply company. During the 80's and 90's, JJ was a pioneer in the involvement of men in the social services of Hamilton Regional Hospital. He also worked as a bag boy for a local pharmacy.
Jewell was the fourth child born to Warren Neal Cochran and Pearlie Estelle Turner Cochran.
JJ is survived by sons, W. Don Cochran and Gary Jewell Cochran; granddaughters, Dianne Nelson, Dawna Lee and Sonja Scott; eight great grandchildren; sisters, Mamie Bishop, Marie Callahan, Thelma Elders, Betty McCarson and Ruth Scruggs; brother Rev. Billy Joe Cochran; former wife, Inez Manly Cochran.
Services were held at Canaanland Baptist Church, in Resaca, Georgia, with the Rev. Isaac Johns officiating.
