Civil War: Company C, 7th California Infantry

Karl W. Andel was born at Wöllstein, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. He came to America with his parents and siblings, Casimir (1840), Adolf (1843), and Sophie (1847). The Andel family settled in St. Clair County, Illinois. Karl adopted an anglicized version of his name and was known as Charles. He wandered west to California where he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant at Jackson October 27, 1864, and was mustered into Company C, 7th California Infantry. Lieutenant Andel was posted to Arizona Territory where he served at Fort Mojave from April 1865 until March 1866. He returned to California and was mustered out with his company at the Presidio of San Francisco April 26, 1866 (Orton, 773). After the war Charles returned to his family in Illinois where he married Lina Burgdorff in March 1872. He was a wholesale liquor distributor at Carlinville and then at Belleville. Charles and Lina had three children: Carl J. (1873, IL), Adolph (1875, IL), and William H. (1877, IL).
