Levi R. Bixby, an old Grand Army veteran, died on Friday evening in Oakland at
the home of his son, Levi S. Bixby, also a veteran. Both are members of Lyon
Post, No. 8, G. A. R.

Civil War: Company H, 7th California Infantry

LEVI R. BIXBY was born October 31, 1818, in Westfield, Massachusetts, and was a
carpenter by trade. He came to California in 1851 and followed his trade for a
time. He served in a coasting vessel for three years then went to the mines,
where he remained about ten years, during which time he joined an independent
company of home guards. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private October 8,
1864, at Coulterville, California, and was mustered into Company H, 7th
California Infantry, on December 22, 1864. Private Bixby served in Bear Valley,
San Francisco, Drum Barracks, lower California, Fort Yuma, on the Arizona line,
and Fort Goodwin. He was honorably discharged at Drum Barracks, California, on
March 1, 1866. Bixby was a member of Lyon Post, G.A.R., of Oakland, California,
his place of residence.
