SAN DIEGO — Carol Lou (Kreuzer) Hemingway died at her home in San Diego on Mother's Day, May 13, 2007, of non-smokers lung cancer.
She was born in La Crosse to William and Margaret Kreuzer and attended La Crosse Central High School (Class of 1956). Carol was one of the first female life guards at La Crosse's Pettibone Beach and also participated in the Miss West Wisconsin Beauty Pageant. After graduating from University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Occupational Therapy, she married fellow Centralite Dennis Hemingway (Class of 1954), then a medical student at UW-Madison and in the Army Reserves, in 1960.
After 10 years of U.S. Army service, they settled in San Diego with their four children. Always a stay-at-home mom, Carol did free-lance writing, having numerous poems and articles published as well as writing scripts for a local religious television program and also appearing on camera. She also took time to teach a writing class to a group of homeless, as well as becoming a water safety and CPR instructor.
Carol enjoyed cruising, white water rafting, boating and cross country train trips to the family cottage in Wisconsin. However, her main passion centered around her family, her faith and her friends. She was a courageous, quiet disciple, full of love, grace and dignity and devoted to giving and caring. She shared herself with all in her presence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at Saint Mark's United Methodist Church in San Diego. Interment will be at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego.
She is survived by her husband, Dennis; sons, Kevin (Stacy), Steve (Terry) and Troy (Leah); daughter, Jill (Bill) Angove, all residing in California; grandchildren, Jordon, Kelten, Dana, Amy, Morgan, Mitchell and Trevor, also of California; sister, June (Terry) Eisenman of Colorado; and brother, Bill Kreuzer of La Crosse.
