CAPT USAAF WWII - MIA/KIA
EQS EAST SEO, Sector Search Sq
He was the husband of Mrs Ellen 'Jane' (Smith) Porter of Dayton OH, and the son of John Lawrence Porter, II and Rita (Hawley) Porter of Marysville/Tiffon, Union Co OH. He graduated from Marysville High School along with his crewmate, SSgt Harold W Neibler.
His crewmate, Sgt Walter R Oswalt been one of many survivors who previously bailed out of a C-47 transport crash over India. Oswalt had broken his leg in the jump. The survivors made a long trek back to safety with the help of locals. This account is written in the book 'Flying The Hump: In Original WWII Color'. Captain Porter, a Pilot with more than 2,250 flight hours followed with an effort to establish a permanent Search & Rescue Squadron for missing air crews over the Hump.
The crash in which Porter, Oswalt and his crew were later killed is documented in the same book, with an account given by the sole survivor and CoPilot, Lt James F Spain. The pilot, Capt. John Porter, gave the order to bailout. Lt Spain's clothes got hung up while he tried to exit the aircraft through the top hatch, and he was freed by Capt Porter pushing him out. When Lt Spain left the aircraft, it was entirely in flames. By the time he pulled his ripcord, the airplane had crashed and exploded.
With the exception of Lt Spain, he and the other crew members were killed 10 December 1943 in 'B-25D #41-30362' when it crashed.
