Died on January 16, 1942 in the crash of TWA Flight DC-3 along with 21 others. Aboard were a crew of 3 with 4 civilian travelers, including Carole Lombard, the wife of Clark Gable. All 15 other passengers were Army Air Corps servicemen. A total of 22 lives lost on Mt. Potosi, Nevada.

Second Lieutenant Charles Darrel Nelson, who attended the University of North Dakota from 1936 – 1939, was one of the 22 victims of the airplane crash near Las Vegas Nev Friday night. It was announced Saturday. He was 24 years old.
Lt Nelson, was born Oct 8 1917 in Fargo. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity here.
Nelson was the son of Mr and Mrs George N Nelson, the elder Nelson formerly was treasurer of the ND Harness Co and died in 1934, Mrs Nelson moved to St Cloud a year later where she now lives.
Nelson graduated form Fargo high school in 1935, attended Shattuck Military academy at Faribault MN and the University of Minnesota one year.
Besides his mother, Nelson is survived by a brother, Roland of Minneapolis .
Mrs George Nelson is a daughter of the late County Auditor William Ackerman of Grand Forks County.
