AN EARLY PIONEER GONE

Jacob Hudson, an early pioneer of Washington township and one of the few surviving veterans of the Mexican war passed away at the homestead four miles southwest of Bowling Green, Wednesday, of general debility at the age of 86.
The deceased was born in Randolph county, North Carolina, on June 12th, 1823 and was the second of four children of James and Margaret (Luther) Hudson, the former a native of Virginia, and the latter of North Carolina.
In 1827 the family emigrated to Indiana and located at Bowling Green. The deceased was raised on the farm which his father entered from the government and he continued in the occupation of a farmer until he was compelled to retire on account of old age.
When the call was issued for volunteers for two regiments for the Mexican war in 1846, the deceased was among the first to enlist in the company recruited by Captain Osborne at Bowling Green, which became company D of the 2nd Indiana Volunteers. The deceased served one year in the Mexican War and was honorably discharged in 1847. He was the last survivor of the company living in Clay County.
On February 10th, 1849, he was united in marriage to Margaret Luther a native of Clay county. The marriage ceremony was performed by Dr. John Williams who Is still living at Bowling Green. Ten children were born to this union, of which with the aged widow two sons and four daughters survive as follows: John E. and Joseph N. Hudson, Mrs Mary Loncer, Mrs. Maria J. Stiner. Mrs Nancy B. Zürcher and Mrs. Julia E. Murbarger
( ** See note at bottom). The deceased was a Democrat In politics and cast his first vote for James K. Polk for president. The deceased was a faithful member of the Christian church, an honorable and upright man and his death will be regretted by a large circle of friends. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 10 o'clock Friday morning and the remains will be laid to rest in the Swalley cemetery in Washington township.

** Note - The obit says he was survived by a daughter Mrs. Julia E. Murbarger. He had a daughter named Julia Harden but my records show that Julia died in Oct. 1903. It is a mystery who Julia Murbarger is.
