He was well-known in the area for his wine making and as an editorial contributor to The Oak Ridger and the Courier News in Clinton. Mr. Smith had owned a number of businesses in Colorado, Kentucky, and Tennessee during his lifetime. He returned in 1983 as vice president of American Business Brokers Inc. of Knoxville.
Mr. Smith is survived by his sons, Robert Smith and his wife, Alice, and Gary Smith and his wife, Barbara; his daughter, Cathy, and by five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
His wife, Doris Lidstrom Smith preceded him in death. They had been married 51 years at the time of her death. Two brothers and a sister, Clyde Smith, Howard Smith and Thelma Duncan also died earlier.
