Irene Erickson,90, Tyler, died Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at Tyler Healthcare Center, Tyler after battling cancer.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 3 at Sillerud Lutheran Church, rural Balaton, with Pastor Steven Quist officiating.
Honorary casket bearers were Harlan Petersen, Mike Wooge, Leroy Olsen, Richard Olsen, Dale Wieme and Bruce Johnson.
Casket bearers were grandsons Roman Wieme, Trent Erickson, Alexander Erickson, Dustin Barber, Travis Erickson, Tony Barber and Shawn Erickson.
Interment was in Opdal Cemetery.
M. Irene Erickson was born Dec. 18, 1916 to Robert Percy and Stella Irene (Doyle) Elliott in Paulina, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Presbyterian Church. She moved with her family to Tracy, where she graduated from Tracy High School in 1934. Following high school she worked for the Tracy Headlight Herald newspaper and the William Mitchell Law Office.
She married Orville Erickson on January 6, 1945 in Tracy. The couple farmed near Florence. Prior to retirement in 1976, Irene worked at the Tyler medical clinic and later at Johnson Poultry Farm, rural Balaton. Following Orville's death in 1984, she continued to live on the farm and cooked part-time at the Ruthton Senior Center in Ruthton. In 2004 she moved to Danebod Village in Tyler. In November 2006 she was diagnosed with cancer.
She was a member of Opdal Lutheran Church in Florence, and since its closing was a member of Sillerud Lutheran Church, rural Balaton. She was active in the Ladies Aid, Sewing Circle, choir, Bible Study and as a Sunday school teacher. She was a 4-H leader for Shelburne Township, and a member of the Lyon County Farm Bureau, the Lyon County Historical Society, and the Grandmother's Club.
She is survived by her children, Allen (Mary) Erickson, Russell; Bernie (Kathy) Erickson, Bemidji; Dawn (Dave) Sturn, Florence and Brian (Jesse) Erickson, Marshall; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandson; a brother, Wayne (Lois) Elliott, Shakopee; sisters, Anna Mae Frahm, Mankato and Elsie Kruse, Des Moines, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Lois Elliott, Tracy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville; daughter, Gloria Wieme; infant granddaughter, Virginia Irene Erickson; brothers, Leonard and Eugene Elliott and best friend, Lois Johnson.
