Jose Galvan passed away at the family home in Poulsbo, Washington on February 9, 2013.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, the oldest of 4 children to Joe and Esther Galvan, he moved with his family to Southern California at the age of 5. Attending school in the Los Angeles area, he exceled in everything he participated in – sports, leadership and academics, earning appointments to both Annapolis and West Point, but chose to pursue his future with the United States Navy.
Jose graduated from Annapolis, was commissioned in 1977 and chose the submarine service. He married his childhood friend, Patricia Elaine Ho on June 24, 1978 in Faith Chapel at Long Beach Naval Shipyard. They had two children together, Jennifer and Phillip.
Jose stressed the importance of education to his children by example. He earned two master's degrees, an MBA from City University and a Master of Science degree in systems engineering from the Naval Post Graduate School.
In the submarine service, Jose served on the USS George Washington (SSBN-598) and USS Ulysses S. Grant (SSBN-631). He left the submarine service in October 1987, joined the US Naval Reserves and was discharged in1989. During a shore duty assignment, Jose traveled to the Trident Naval Facility at Bangor, Washington, and fell in love with the area. Upon leaving the Navy, it was only natural that he shared his love of the Pacific Northwest with his family and moved the family from Connecticut to Washington State. His loyalty to the country and Navy did not end with his discharge from active duty service; he continued to serve by working at NUWC Keyport and retired from civil service on March 31, 2012.
A devoted father, Jose supported his children in all of their activities attending track meets, band concerts, bowling tournaments and many scouting events. He believed in the Scouting program and continued working with adult leaders to bring Scouting to the youth of Kitsap County long after his children were out of scouts.
Jose is survived by his wife of 34 years, Patricia; daughter Jennifer (Patrick) Ward, son Phillip; sister Irma (Armando) Marquez; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
