Emily Acton was the daughter of Aaron Acton and Priscilla Grishaw (or Gresham). Her paternal grandparents were James Acton and Elizabeth McCraft. There seems to be a lot of mystery, confusion and controversy surrounding James' origin and who his parents were. There is a legend about him coming from England to the US at the time of the American Revolution. He initially refused to take up arms against Britian, but changed his mind later. It's also said that Elizabeth had been kidnapped by pirates from her home in Scotland and sold into bondage in Virginia. James bought her freedom and married her. We are unable to verify the accuracy of the legend at this time.
The Grishaw's were Scottish settlers from Virginia who moved to Kentucky.
Emily's father, Aaron moved from Henry Co, Virginia to Kentucky, where she was born and married Martin Dunn (my 3rd great-grandfather), who's family had also had come from Virginia. She died in SW Iowa. Her sons fought in the US Civil War for the Union, and moved to south-central Kansas together afterwards in 1873 (see photo). Their daughter, Elizabeth Acton Dunn married William Burrell and died in Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1897.
Her children were: James Acton Dunn, Thomas Edilow Dunn, John Parker Dunn, William M. Dunn, George Washington Dunn and Elizabeth Acton Dunn.
