Martin Dunn, from Somerset, Pulaski Co., Kentucky was the son of James Dunn, a school teacher and Methodist minister from England, who initially settled in Virginia after immigration to the US. James married Dicey Martin of Spotsylvania County, VA. James and Dicey then moved southwest to the mountains of Virginia, then on to Kentucky as the frontier opened.

Martin married Emily Acton, daughter of Aaron Acton and Priscilla Grishaw (daughter of Isaac Spice and Lettice Grishaw, from Scotland). Their family of 5 boys and one girl moved from Kentucky to Decatur Co, IA. Martin died shortly afterwards. Martin and Emily's sons fought for the Union during the Civil War and moved in 1873 to Reno County, Kansas. Their daughter, Elizabeth married William Burrell and died in Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1897.
