Josephine Powel was born in Missouri (I've also seen listings of her being born in Iowa. In any case, it was near the western border between the two states) in May 1845 to James and Myra Ann Powel. She married Thomas Edilow Dunn in 1863 in Decatur Co., Iowa and moved with her parents and her husband's family to Reno County, Kansas in 1873.
Her husband, Thomas died of the measles in 1887, leaving her as a single mother of two boys, Homer Alda Dunn and Olen A. Dunn and two daughters, Myra and Lizzie. She never remarried, and died in 1925 in Reno County (probably Salt Creek).
