Charles was the son of James Millard Baker and his 2nd wife, Mary Larkin. He was born on Bennett's Corner Road in the town of Camillus, NY on December 25, 1836.

He married Mary Hinsdale, daughter of Ira Hinsdale and his wife Ann Peck , on August 25, 1859. The minister was Lucius E. Barnard. They started married life at the home of Charles' parents, but had a home of their own by 1866 in the section of Camillus known as "The Bitters".

In 1869 they bought a farm just outside of Medina, in Orleans County on the Old Plank Road leading to Shelby.

They had four children:

Edward Hinsdale Baker - b. May 28, 1860; m. Georgia Bean Oct. 25, 1887; married 2nd, May Whiting Palmer, April 14, 1909; d. April 14, 1927 in Yonkers, NY

Charles Henry Baker - b. March 18, 1864; m. Sept. 14, 1892, Nellie Louisa Collins in Brooklyn; d. Jan. 30, 1903 in Brooklyn

James Millard Baker - b. Dec. 13, 1866; m. May Harriet Rhoades, July 19, 1895; M. 2nd Susan Roberts, May 31, 1933; d. Mar. 23, 1952 in Asheville, NC

Florence A. Baker - b. Dec. 6, 1875; m. Oct. 31, 1914, John Philip Clum; d. June 30, 1961 in Los Angeles, CA

In his son James' book, "Contending The Grade In India" he described Charles - "tall, dark haired, fond of books, inclined to be stern and a trifle visionary".

Charles died on April 23, 1909, four years after the death of his wife. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage, in the Hudson River State Hospital in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, NY.

This is my great grandfather. Charles and wife Mary resided on their farm many years on Shelby Rd near Medina N.Y. They retired in Yonkers.Charles' maother's maiden name was Larkin, not Larken.
