Robby Frantz lost his father when he was 4 years old and dropped out of high school. He joined the Army 10 months ago (August, 2002) in the hopes of turning his life around. He was assigned to Comp. B, 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division. After his service, he wanted to become a police officer.
Robby was buried on June 30, 2003 at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery and the service was held in the Dodd Field Chapel. Approximately 250 people were in attendence.
Robby was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Maj. Gen. Robert T. Clark presented these to Kim Smith, Robby's mother, at the service. Maj. Gen. Clark also presented Mrs. Smith with an American flag. Maj. Gen. Clark is the deputy commanding general, 5th U.S. Army.
Robby was engaged to Ana Perez and has a 2 year old daughter named Shannon.
He was killed when a grenade thrown by a local resident exploded near him while on guard duty in Baghdad, Iraq.
He was only 19 years old.
