-CHESTER -- The funeral for the Rev. James Wofford "Stue" Boyd Jr. of 523 Carolina Drive was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 25, at Pineville AME Zion Church in Rock Hill. Bishop Clarence Carr officiated and was assisted by Bishop George E. Battle Jr., Bishop Joseph Johnson, Presiding Elder W.O. Thompson, Presiding Elder Otha L. Smith, the Rev. Dr. Robert Christian Jr., the Rev. Dr. Reid White Jr., the Rev. Dr. Z.B. Wells, the Rev. Albert Young, the Rev. Harold Jones, the Rev. Dorothy Jeter and the Rev Terrance Jones. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
-The Rev. Boyd, 54, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008.
-Born in Chester County on March 31, 1954, he was a son of the Rev. James W. Boyd Sr. and the late Carrie McCrorey Boyd. The Rev. Boyd joined Rehoboth AME Zion Church at an early age and was pastor of Pineville AME Zion Church in Rock Hill. In the South Carolina Conference, the Rev. Boyd served as finance committee chairman and was chairman of the development committee. He served on the Rock Hill District as president of the Rock Hill District Ministerial Alliance, finance committee and executive committee. The Rev. Boyd was the former pastor of New Hope AME Zion for 25 years, where he served on the Spartanburg District in the Palmetto Conference as conference treasurer, finance chairman and conference evangelism chairman. He also served as a member of the State of the Country, strategic planning and development committees, Triers of Appeals, as instruction of conference studies and served on the restructuring commission of the AME Zion Church. The Rev. Boyd was a graduate of Lewisville High School, the International College of Bible Theology in Petersburg, Va. and was a U.S. Army veteran. He worked as a brick mason for over 30 years.
-Survivors include his wife, Shirley A. Wylie-Boyd; a son, James W. Boyd III of the home; a daughter, Monica L. Boyd of the home; his father, the Rev. James W. Boyd Sr. of Rochester, N.Y.; four brothers, John Boyd and his wife, Carolyn, the Rev. Heyward Boyd Sr. and his wife, Lachan, Reggie Boyd and his wife, Elder Latonya Boyd, and Keith Boyd and his wife, the Rev. Angela Boyd, all of Chester; two sisters, the Rev. Vivian Pressley and her husband, Michael, of Rock Hill and the Rev. Betty B. Mackey of Rochester, N.Y.; his mother-in-law, Rosa Lee Wylie of Chester; nine aunts; three uncles; three sisters-in-law; and two brothers-in-law.
-He was preceded in death by two sisters, Bertha Jane Boyd and the Rev. Maggie Yvonne Boyd.
-South Atlantic Episcopal District served as flower bearers and casket bearers.
-King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester, was in charge of arrangements.
