Earl was one of twelve children of Jonathan Bunner and his wife Miranda Jane Moran. He grew up on his parents' farm in the Knottsville District of Taylor County, WV.

Per his World War I draft registration, he was a farmer and was described as tall and slender, with light brown eyes and dark brown hair.

In the 1920 census, Earl was still living at his parents' farm and his occupation was listed as potter.

Earl married Mary Louise Ellers, a daughter of George & Charlotte Ellers, on June 29, 1922. They were married in Grafton by E. H. Waters, U. B. Minister. Per their marriage license, Earl was a fireman for the railroad and Mary was a beautician.

Earl died of cancer in Grafton on October 26, 1927 and he was buried two days later in Bluemont Cemetery. His widow Mary died and was buried next to him less than three years later.
