Lott was the son of Ezekiel and Abigail (Dyer) Counts. He gave the following account of his family.
May 13, 1934
I am a son of Ezekiel and Abigail Dyer Counts, and was born at Cleveland, Virginia, 185--. I am a brother of Joshua J. Counts. My grandfather Counts was named John and his wife was Peggy Kelley. They lived right near where I now live at Cleveland. I don't know the exact spot where they were buried, but it was up in the hollow above my house in the old Counts Graveyard, where my parents are buried. When I was a boy, I remember seeing only three or four graves there. Some were 25 or 30 feet below my parents graves.
I can remember when brother Jack Counts' first wife -Elizabeth- was buried - just a little east of the old graves. There was a little grave about 50 feet above where the old graves are, where I was told that a little darkey child, belonging to Granddaddy Counts, was buried. My father's first wife - Elizabeth Ambugey - was buried there - probably one of the old graves.
I don't remember anything about the old Kelleys. Grandmother Counts was Peggy Kelley. I don't remember hearing Daddy telling anything about the Kelleys, for I was young when he died. He died in 1871.
