George came to the United States with his parents on the ship "Harlequin," sailing from Hull, England, to New York City in 1852. From there they went to Cincinnati, where his maternal grandparents had gone, and then to Indiana.
He married Margaret Patterson on 1 May 1859 in Rush Co, IN.
Death Notice (Indianapolis News, Saturday, May 3, 1924, page 30):
BROWN--George W., age 86 years, father of Sam T., G. A., A. H., L. J., Mrs. Laura Colvin, Mrs. E. C. Weir, Mrs. William Dunkel (sic), passed away Saturday a.m. Friends may call at residence, 2340 Park ave., Sunday afternoon. Private services Monday, 2 p.m. Interment Crown Hill.
George operated a general store at New Salem, Rush Co., Ind., in partnership with Hamilton Miller; sold his interest 10 March 1876; farmed for a few years; moved to Pierce City, Lawrence Co., Mo., where he operated a small slaughter house and meat market; moved to Indianapolis c. 1885 and joined his brother Charles Brown in the wholesale business under the name of Brown Brothers; was one of the organizers of the Indianapolis Abattoir Company, c. 1890.
