Murray was a registered, purebred West Highland White Terrier, but we bought him for a family pet and never showed him or even got the traditional Westie cut.

Our son Robbie had pleaded for a dog for a year or more when we finally gave in and bought Murray. From then on, Robbie and Murray were best friends---Murray even slept in Robbie's bed, UNDER the covers with Robbie!

Murray seldom looked white except after a bath, as he loved to dig---don't all terriers?? Even after a bath, the fur around his mouth remained brownish. And usually, the first thing after a bath, he would run out the pet door to the backyard and roll in the dirt!

Having ancestors from the Highlands of Scotland, he loved cold weather---and ADORED snow! When we had snow, he would run outside and tunnel through it.

Of course, with his long shaggy coat, we had to trim him in the summer months, which can be brutally hot here in southwest Kansas. We just cut the hair ourselves, and he sure looked funny afterwards! But at least it helped to keep him cool. During the really hot weather, he preferred to stay inside with the air conditioning, going outside only as necessary. All our pets enjoyed the freedom to come and go from the house into the backyard, as we have pet doors.

Even as a puppy, Murray was bigger than our resident King of the Castle, Whitey the Cat, but Murray quickly learned to be very deferential to Whitey or he would risk having his nose sliced open by Whitey's claws. Soon they were the best of friends.

Later, when we acquired Mac, the tan/orange cat, Murray and Mac became inseparable, and loved to romp and play together. Mac would chase Murray into the kitchen, and then Murray would turn and chase Mac back into the living room. Then they would stage a mock fight and roll over and over together, but they never actually hurt each other.

When Mac died from accidental antifreeze poisoning in early January 2000, Murray was almost inconsolable; and then, when Robbie died from a seizure in his sleep 3 months later, Murray went into a depression for a while. He would wander all through the house and then all around the backyard, seemingly looking for his two lost companions. Eventually, he made friends with our new cat, a calico named Samantha, but they never played together the way Mac and Murray had played.

Murray even survived almost being squeezed to death accidentally by the motorized lift chair we bought for my dear Papa, who came to live with us in 2001, at the age of 88. Papa didn't realize Murray had crawled up under the recliner, and he was pushing the button to lower his feet. We heard the most terrible screams and came running, just in time to rescue poor Murray, who lost one of his toenails in the accident. We took Murray to the vet to check him out, but the lost toenail seemed to be the worst of it. Of course, after that, Murray seldom went to sleep under my Dad's chair!

Murray went into a slow decline in 2006 when he was 16 years old, and finally became so ill that the vet advised us to have him "put down." It was a terribly difficult decision to make, but we could not let him suffer. I held him as the doctor gave him the shot and until his sweet spirit had passed over.

We know he romps and plays in heaven's fields with his beloved Robbie, Mac, and Whitey.
