Georgiana Spencer Cavendish
Birth: Jun. 7, 1757
Daventry District
Northamptonshire, England
Death: Mar. 30, 1806
City of Westminster
Greater London, England

First wife of 5th Duke of Devonshire. Born Lady Georgiana Spencer (at Althorpe), a fashion innovator, woman of letters, and patroness of virtually every distinguished performing artist and rising liberal politician of her time. She was entertained by Richard Sheridan, Samuel Johnson, and others who commented on her grace, charm, and wit. She was reputed to be the model for one of the characters in Sheridan’s play "A School for Scandal." Famous for her ability to set fashion, Georgiana was also notorious for her role in a ménage à trois with the 5th Duke of Devonshire and her eventual successor as Duchess, Lady Elizabeth Foster. In 1782, the Devonshires "adopted" Lady Elizabeth Foster; "Bess" became Georgiana's dearest friend, as wll as the Duke's mistress. Lady Elizabeth had two children by the Duke -- a son and daughter. Lady Georgiana formed a relationship with Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, by whom she had a daughter (an ancestor of Sarah, Duchess of York). Lady Georgiana was also the first woman to publicly campaign for a candidate in an election (in 1784, for Charles James Fox). Georgiana became a negotiator, fundraiser and manager of the Whig Party. The Duchess's fame was so great that when news that she was dying spread, a large crowd gathered at the gates to Devonshire house in Picadilly for news. Lady Georgiana was the sister of an ancestor of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, whose beauty, sweetness, commitment to charitable causes, and elegant fashion sense she shared. (bio by: K F)
