There has been much debate over the years where GW McClave was born and came from. The census where he lived in Greenup County, Kentucky, all indicate he was born in the state of Maryland. The Greenup County history book states he is from Ireland. Possibly considered due to his dialect.
Of the family bibles, stories, and genealogy research handed down to through the years, no one knows. It was said that he would never speak of his family or heritage until the last year of his life. There is a story from his granddaughter stating that GW would never tell where he was actually from, but told her that "she went to where he was from, that she would not be ashamed."
George was one of Greenup Counties first carpenters, making washboards. He is also said to have made the cabinetry that still exists today in Portsmouth, Ohio's oldest home.
We've also been told that the McClave's are descendant from 5 setting presidents of the United States. Sarah Coleman, GW's wife has a story handed down that President James Madison was an uncle and that he made her promise to name a child after him, which she appears to have done.
