After her husband died unexpectedly of a heart attack, she sold the mill he had owned to pay off their debts. Jane then established a girl's school in her home and took in boarders in order to make ends meet. She wrote a diary during the War Between the States detailing the war in and around Fredericksburg, Va., her home. This book, "The Journal of Jane Howison Beale", is on display at the Fredericksburg Area Museum.
