|Birth: ||Sep. 19, 1892|
|Death: ||Jun. 13, 1975|
New Jersey, USA
Date of birth 19 September 1892 comes from an old handwritten list found among the possessions of Jersey City family members. Its author is unknown. The Social Security Death Index has her DOB as 1 July 1892.
Karolina Sabat emigrated at age 18 from Nadolany, Sanok, Podkarpackie, Poland. At the time Nadolany was within the Kingdom of Galicia, which was controlled by the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.
She was single and traveled alone on the SS Amerika from Hamburg, Germany. The ship arrived in New York City on 10 September 1910. A Record of Detained Aliens from the SS Amerika states that "disposition was to uncle" with pick up by "Aunt Mrs. Michael Osiurak, 808 Newark Ave., J.C., NJ" at 4:15 p.m., 10 September 1910.
Census records state Karolina married Joseph Maliawsky at age 20. That would be about 1912-1913.
In 1920, they were living along the Hudson River waterfront across from Manhattan at 1219 River Road, Shady Side, in North Bergen Ward 1, Hudson County NJ with three young children - Mary, Joseph and Olga. Infant Olga's name was mistakenly enumerated as Carolina.
In 1930, they were living at 180 (rear) Sutton Avenue, Fairview, Bergen County NJ with seven children. Between 1921 and 1928, four sons had been born: John, George, Walter and Alexander. In this census, wife Karolina was mistakenly enumerated as Catherine. [Neither parent spoke English.]
Another daughter, Carol, was born in 1930 after the census. There is a note on George's 1923 birth certificate that Karolina gave birth to a child who didn't survive.
In 1940, Joseph, Karolina and six children were living in a large first floor apartment at 247 Halladay Street in Jersey City, Hudson County. This would be the family's home until 1966. Two sons, Joseph and John, were living on their own - 18 year old John at a Civilian Conservation Corps camp and 21 year old Joseph in the US Army.
In 1966, Karolina and sons George, Walter and Alex relocated to an apartment building facing Washington Square in Jersey City.
In her final years, following a stroke, Karolina was cared for at home by her youngest son Alexander. Also in the apartment were her sons George and Walter. Son John and his family lived nearby. Daughter Mary had become a Catholic Nun. She was stationed in Massachusetts. Son Joseph lived in South Jersey with his family. Daughters Olga and Carol had relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1949.
At her death in 1975, Karolina had three granddaughters, Leona, Jo Terry and Melodie, and two grandsons, Joseph and David. She has one great-granddaughter Lindsay.
Funeral services were held at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church. Arrangements were by Wood Funeral Residence, 582 Bergen Avenue, Jersey City NJ.
