Chronicle Herald March 22, 2012
BURKE, Victor Desire - 97, formerly of River Bourgeois, passed away peacefully on March 20th, 2012, surrounded by family and friends at his home in Richmond Villa. Born in River Bourgeois on January 24th, 1915, he was a son of the late Dominique Burke and Philomen Burke. He married his dear wife, Evelyn, on September 11th, 1940. Victor was a pillar of his commu-nity, serving as Postmaster for 25 years and as the owner of Burke's Store on South Side River Bourgeois, which he and Evelyn ran for 41 years. After closing the store in 1980, he spent his time working hard at the things he loved, including tending to his impressive garden. He was a fix-ture at card games in St. Peter's for many years, and he loved to go fishing, do crossword puzzles, and sneak treats to his grandchildren, just as he is remembered for doing to so many young patrons of his store. He was an active member of St. John the Baptist parish in River Bourgeois, where he was a reader, a Eucharistic Minister, and took collection. His selfless gene-rosity, kind heart, and warm smile were known far and wide, and will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. Victor is survived by the light of his life, his loving wife and companion of 71 years, Evelyn (Fougere);daughters, Linda (Blaine) Rafuse, Dartmouth, and Debbie (Gerry) Bidochka, Edmonton. He was adored by his grandchildren, Gina (Joey) MacDonald, Donelda (Chris), Ryan, Amanda, Krista (Ryan) Ratchford, Bradley and Robyn. His neck tickles will be greatly missed by his great-grandchildren, Nick, Alandra, Rory, Clayton and Nyahzia. He is also survived by his brother ,Lawrence Burke and many special nieces and nephews and extended family. Hewas predeceased by his parents and siblings, Rachel, Minnie, Elizabeth, Emily, Mickey, Carrie, Lena, John and Carrie in infancy. Vis-itation will take place in River Bourgeois Funeral Home, from 2-9 p.m. today, March 22nd. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 23rd in St.John the Baptist Church in River Bourgeois, with burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. All are welcome to join the family in Tara Lynn Community Center in River Bourgeois following the funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations in Victor's memory can be made to Richmond Villa. Arrangements have been entrusted to Green's Funeral Home, Port Haw-kesbury. Special thanks to the staff of Richmond Villa for their incomparable compassion, boundless dedication to Grandpa's care, and continued support, and to everyone who made Grandpa's final days so comfortable and filled with the people he loved.
