Remembering Dr. Joseph Colombo
Former Center board member and generous benefactor Dr. Joseph Colombo died suddenly on January 2, 2012, at the age of 57. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Joe is survived by his parents, two siblings and many loving family members as well as a vast number of friends, colleagues and mentees who will deeply miss his good heart, quick wit and sharp intellect.
A full professor and former Chair of the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at University of San Diego, Dr. Colombo was an engaging and popular teacher who served the University in many ways, including expanding horizons at USD by offering classes such as "Gay and Lesbian Voices," as well as traditional theological topics.
Joe served the LGBT community in so many ways – as a mentor to many (including Councilmember Todd Gloria), a generous
friend, a pillar of the community we are proud of and a kind man who was wickedly funny. He shared both his treasure and his time with The Center, serving on the Board of Directors from 1991 to 1995.
Memorial services will be held at the University of San Diego on Friday, Feb. 10, and at The Center on Saturday, Feb. 11.
