The family name is found in various records as Medcalf or Metcalf. In fact his father is listed as Vincent Medcalf in census records for 1840 through 1870. James Wesley's mother was Mary Ann Jenkins.
He was born about 1842. Census records show he was age 7 as of June 1, 1850 and age 18 as of June 1, 1860. He was born in either Hardin County or Larue County, Kentucky, the latter being formed from Hardin County in March 1843.
He married Rebecca Joanna Cundiff on May 18, 1862 in Larue County, Kentucky. Their daughter Caroline Helen Metcalf was born March 12, 1863. The child was baptized at St. Catherine Catholic Church, New Haven, Kentucky on September 4, 1863.
James Wesley enlisted in the Union Army at Glasgow, Kentucky, on August 30, 1863. He was a Private. He did not actually muster into service until December 22, 1863, when he joined Company I, 37th Kentucky Infantry. He served just 8 days, dying of typhoid fever on December 30, 1863 at Glasgow, Kentucky. His remains were initially in interred at the Tompkinsville National Cemetery in Monroe County, Kentucky. In 1867 they were moved to Nashville, Tennessee.
His widow Rebecca filed a claim for widow's pension on May 18, 1866. Her pension claim is in the National Archives under claim #888423. Rebecca married again, to Richard Wright, on January 25, 1868 in Larue County, Kentucky. Rebecca lived a long life, dying in 1938. She is buried in Sand Creek Cemetery, Greensburg, Decatur County, Indiana.
