The Baptist Historian Who Died In Eminence Wednesday.

Rev. John Henry Spencer, D. D., the Kentucky Baptist historian, who died in Eminence Wednesday, was born September 9, 1826, in Allen county, Kentucky. He was educated at the district school and afterward took a course at Bethel College, Russellville, Ky.

In 1854 he was ordained a Baptist minister. On September 15, 1861, he married Miss Alice L. Everhardt. He was pastor first at Cloverport, Ky., and later at Henderson. After the death of his first wife he became an evangelist and held meetings in various parts of Kentucky.

In 1875 he married Miss Burilla B. Walker. Having a literary bent, he began collecting material for a history of the Kentucky Baptists. He had previously written a "Biography of T. J. Fisher," a booklet "Action of Baptism" and many articles for the religious press.

In 1876 the General Association of Kentucky Baptists at the recommendation of Gen. Green Clay Smith committed the matter of writing a History of Kentucky Baptists into his hands. For ten years he worked on this great undertaking and completed the religious record of the great denomination from the time that Rev. Squire Boone, brother of Daniel Boone, the first Baptist preacher, entered Kentucky in 1769, down to the year 1885. The history was published in two large volumes, with about 1,500 pages, and contained a sketch of every association and biographical sketches of over 800 preachers.

Dr. Spencer suffered from rheumatism and was confined to his home for several years. Aided by his accomplished wife the history was prepared for publication and put on sale very successfully. For years he lived a patient sufferer in his little home in Eminence, Ky., where he died at 4:30 a. m., December 22, 1897. Funeral services were held at Eminence and also at Beechland Baptist church, near Pleasant Ridge Park, Jefferson county, where the remains were buried by the grave of his first wife.
